Pomu is the first time I've been familiar with someone before their current vtubing identity, and it's still kind of surreal to me how normal her being Pomu feels. Like, as soon as I started watching her debut: she's Pomu! And it's not that her previous avatar didn't fit her, or anything like that. Seeing the same person with a completely different name and appearance is just... normal.
To be fair Pomu just looks super comfortable in her "skin". On the other way for me, Youtube recommends decided to just dox Kiara for me. It's sooooo weird to hear that cartoon character voice for a human person!

and when I say "skilled" I mean "former top 500"; from what I hear she's easily the top EN vtuber and only matched by a couple others worldwide
Apparently you may even be underselling it a little. Some comments mentioned she might have reached rank 28 or something ridiculous like that.

I had that happen to me with Noel, of all people. So... uh, yeah, that was a bit of a surprise for a number of reasons.
One thing I found interesting in the comments of some of these videos is that most of them kept kayfabe going, with the running joke being "Hey, they sound like (insert Vtuber here)! They must be their biggest fan!" and other comments that disassociate the two. It does turn more into a "nudge nudge, wink wink" thing, but at least they're respecting the person involved and not saying it out loud.

Gura is currently doing a "Bardcore" Unarchived Karaoke. Quite the experience.

I'm a little surprised that Hololive hasn't made them delete their old content/channels and put up cease and desist stuff on clips and things of their RL selves. Not just to keep up appearances but also as a means to protect them.

HoloLive does C&D doxx-clipping channels that explicitly out the performers, but my understanding is the degree to which a vtuber's "past life" needs to be put on hold depends heavily on the vtuber themselves.
Without getting into spoilers/doxxing (but spoiler-tagging anyways for people for whom even implications is too much):
Spoiler: Show
So out of that sampling, we have the following groups:
- Vtubers that can't afford to abandon their past lives.
- Vtubers that can maybe afford to, but don't want to.
- Vtubers that can put their past lives on hiatus, but don't want to delete them (maybe for sentimental reasons, maybe because even a dead YouTube channel can be nontrivial monthly revenue when it has a couple hundred videos on it).
- Vtubers that nuke their past lives from orbit.
- Vtubers that hadn't actually done anything prior to becoming a vtuber, so their "past life" is their actual, real social media presence.
If Cover required that their prospective talent delist everything they've ever done, they'd be looking at a much narrower talent pool and many of their most beloved members wouldn't be with the company.

And honestly you'd have to be desperate or friggin' insane to comply with that demand. Previous content you created is stuff is stuff you own. It's a revenue stream of it's own and insurance if the Hololive gig does not pan out.

On the Japanese side, most of the Vtubers have stopped posting as their past life, for a couple of reasons. First of all, most of them were either very new on the scene before they became VTubers (notice that I did not say Hololive talents, some of them had stints as independents or in Nijisanji), or veterans with stagnating channels that no longer provided them with any income (Okayu and Korone were actually like that, their original identities were two of the oldest Let's Play channels on Niconico). Second, there were a handful who got in Hololive from the IRL idol industry, who obviously had to cut ties with their previous identities, as those were owned by whatever production company their idol group belonged to. And of course, you can't discount the fact that many of the Hololive VTubers are very introverted and don't like getting too much attention to their IRL selves. I am not at all surprised that Aqua or Rushia for example scrubbed their previous identities from the net as soon as they were given the opportunity to hide behind a character and a virtual avatar.

Gura's now reacting to the Taco Bell commercial, I missed the beginning so I have no idea what's the deal here but I guess our little shark has some cross promotion deal going on.

It’s basically Pacific Rim with Burritos.

Biggest disapointment is that it's not a Netflix series.
Yup, deffinitely a promotional thing. She's eating those fries now. In a very Gura way.
